Giovanni Massa is director and producer. In 1978 he joined the C.L.C.T., then chaired by Giuseppe Tornatore, with whom he collaborated on the creation and production of documentaries. In 1988 he produced the film Disamistade, directed by Gianfranco
Cabiddu, realized with the support of Ministry of Culture, the RAI and the Istituto Luce. The movie won the Italian Film Journalists Association Prize and obtained awards in Trento and Valencia. Between 1986 and 1999 he produces and organizes
about thirty documentaries. Since 1986 he starts his first experiences as director, mostly with the production of C.L.C.T. (which has meanwhile become President).
In 1995 he produced the movie Diario senza date, directed by Roberto Andò, awarded at Sulmona and presented at the Venice Film Festival.
In 1998 he care and directs the first edition of the international festival of documentaries Nanookfilmfest.
Between 2000 and 2002 he devoted himself entirely to his first film as director and producer, Il Buma. The film was produced with the assistance of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, having been declared “Film of National Cultural Interest”, and makes use of the national distribution of the Istituto Luce and participation of Sky. It has been released in theaters in 2002. In 2009 he became Artistic Director of the SOLELUNA, international festival of documentary films on Mediterranean and Islam cultures. In recent years he collaborated with the University and the Accademia di Belle Arti of Palermo.
Giovanni Massa, regista e produttore, entra nel 1978 nella C.L.C.T. (Cooperativa Lavoratori del Cinema e del Teatro) allora presieduta da Giuseppe Tornatore, con la quale collabora alla realizzazione e produzione di documentari.
Nel 1988 produce il film Disamistade, per la regia di Gianfranco Cabiddu, realizzato con l’apporto del Ministero dello Spettacolo, della RAI e dell’Istituto Luce. Il film vince il premio dell’Associazione Giornalisti Cinematografici italiani e viene premiato
a Trento e a Valencia.
Tra il 1986 e il 1999 produce e organizza circa trenta documentari. Dal 1986 iniziano le prime esperienze di regia per lo più con la produzione della C.L.C.T. (di cui è nel frattempo divenuto Presidente).
Nel 1995 produce il lungometraggio di Roberto Andò Diario senza date, premiato al festival di Sulmona e presentato al festival di Venezia dello stesso anno.
Nel 1998 cura e dirige la prima edizione del festival internazionale di documentari Nanookfilmfest.
Tra 2000 e 2002 si dedica interamente alla sua prima regia cinematografica, Il Buma, film di cui è anche produttore. Il film è prodotto con l’intervento del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, essendo stato dichiarato “Film di Interesse Culturale Nazionale”, e si avvale della distribuzione nazionale dell’Istituto Luce e della partecipazione di Sky. Esce nelle sale nel 2002.
Nel 2009 viene nominato Direttore Artistico del SOLELUNA, festival internazionale di documentari sul Mediterraneo e l’Islam.
Negli ultimi anni ha collaborato con l’Università degli Studi di Palermo e con l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo.
