In un’area industriale subito fuori Firenze, lungo il fiume Arno, una figura solitaria si avvicina a un edificio misterioso. L’immagine si ferma e si riavvolge, rivelando un laboratorio cinematografico dove un tecnico guarda la stessa scena su un proiettore analogico. Le operazioni nascoste dietro la celluloide vengono svelate, mostrando il processo di sviluppo della pellicola. Dalla camera oscura mostrata con una telecamera a infrarossi, ai bagni che sviluppano la pellicola e rivelano un’immagine latente, allo scanner che converte l’immagine sulla pellicola in una digitale, le macchine iniziano a prendere vita.

In an industrial area by a Tuscan river, a figure approaches a mysterious building. The footage halts and rewinds, revealing a film lab where a technician watches the same scene on an analogue projector. The hidden operations of a Tuscan film laboratory are unveiled. From the darkroom shown with an infrared camera, to the baths that develop the film, to the scanner that converts the image to a digital one; the machines come alive.

Daniel Contaldo

Daniel Contaldo (10-02-1993) è un regista e direttore della fotografia di Firenze, che lavora tra Los Angeles, New York e l’Italia. Il suo lavoro come direttore della fotografia è stato presentato al Telluride Film Festival, Berlinale Film Festival e al The Eye Museum of Film a Amsterdam. Nel 2022 è stato selezionato per il Mentorship Program dell’ASC negli USA. Tra i prossimi lungometraggi come direttore della fotografia c’è Underwood (regia di Amiel Courtin-Wilson, Biennale Orizzonti ‘11,’13). Il lavoro di Daniel esplora l’intersezione tra finzione e documentari.

Daniel Contaldo (10-02-1993)is a director and cinematographer from Florence, Italy, working between LA, NY and Italy. His work has been featured at the Telluride Film Festival, Berlinale Film Festival, Miami Film Festival, The Eye Museum of Film, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, among others. In 2022 he was selected for the American Society of Cinematographers’ Vision Mentorship Program. Recent feature films as DoP include Simchas and Sorrows (2022, Gravitas Ventures), and upcoming ones include Underwood (dir. Amiel Courtin-Wilson, Venice Orizzonti ‘11, ‘13). Daniel’s work explores the intersection of narrative and documentary film, with a focus on building unique visual language from project to project.
