RES ESSENTIAE

Do we perhaps need essence? Essentiality? That which brings us back to the heart of the matter? The matter of connecting with morality, with the sense of being together, of getting to know one another, meeting and letting this meeting touch us and make us different from who we were. Cinema does this.
When we leave the cinema, to put it in Heraclitean terms, we cannot bathe twice in the same film. Something is going through us. And it is a collective feeling, which kindles in all of us the need – more urgent than ever – to rediscover an authentic sense of community, participation and collective responsibility. Otherwise, we risk no longer recognising one another, being able to look at one another only through a screen.
What the 20th edition of SorsiCorti proposes, however, is to look together through a screen and discover our differences. Because we can no longer turn a blind eye or look the other way. Instead, we must discover the value of things: of inclusion, of the importance of recognising ourselves in cultural differences, in neurodiversity, in gender identities and in the myriad forms of human experience that will always go beyond the limits imposed by cold, categorising laws to touch upon what makes us beings of this world: the profound essence of things.
